The Scarlet Ibis: Substantial Themes At its Highest

The Scarlet Ibis is a story, (written by James Hurst), about the memories a grown man had of his little brother, Doodle, who has heart issues. Throughout the story, the two boys spent their lives with each other until one let his pride get in the way and left the other to die in a storm. The Themes in “The Scarlet Iblis” that I am going to talk about have to do with Teamwork, Regret, and Cruelty.

Author James Hurst

The Importance of Teamwork

In “The Scarlet Ibis” the importance of teamwork is showed in many different ways. In the story, it tells how the narrator helped doodle learn how to walk by taking him to a place called “Old Woman Swamp” which is their favorite place to go. It shows this in the text on page 4 which says,Doodle, don’t you want to learn to walk? “He’d nod his head, and I’d say, “Well, if you don’t keep trying, you’ll never learn. Then I’d paint for him a picture of us as old men, white-haired, him with a long white beard and me still pulling him around in the go-cart. This never failed to make him try again. Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds.” This shows that the narrator’s determination and doodle’s trust in his brother led them to make giant progress in teaching him how to walk. This also shows how Doodle was determined by his brother’s trust to learn how to walk even though his brother had been cruel to him once before.

Cruelty Among Siblings

One of the main themes in the story is Cruelty and it is shown in different ways by the narrator. In the story, the author gets caught in a storm with doodle and instead of saving his life, he leaves him to die. It says this on-page 11 which says, “When the deafening peal of thunder had died, and at the moment before the rain arrived, I heard Doodle, who had fallen behind, cry out, “Brother, Brother, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me! The knowledge that Doodle’s and my plans had come to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened. I ran as fast as I could, leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us.” This shows that his pride got the best of him and caused him to choose himself over his brother which results in him leaving Doodle to die. He does this to show authority over Doodle and to show his cruelty that he could not hold in.

The State of Regret

The last theme I want to talk about is regret. In the story, the narrator feels regret after letting his brother work himself to death. This is said in the story on page 12 which says, “Doodle! Doodle!” I cried, shaking him, but there was no answer but the ropy rain. He lay very awkwardly, with his head thrown far back, making his vermilion8 neck appear unusually long and slim. His little legs bent sharply at the knees, had never before seemed so fragile, so thin. I began to weep, and the tear-blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar. “Doodle!” This shows that all the cruelty he showed to Doodle came back to bite him and this overwhelming feeling led him into a state of regret. This also shows that he never wanted to kill him and that he just wanted to show Doodle how he felt about him and how he was embarrassed by him. To be honest, knowing that his cruelty towards Doodle killed him, this memory probably haunted him for the rest of his life.

So, with the themes, I talked about including cruelty, teamwork, and regret you can see the great substantial themes the author is trying to get through to us.

Thank you all for reading my blog and there are more posts coming soon! See you next time!

Farmer Drones: Farming at its Finest

Did you know there is a new and easier way to farm? Farmers have started to use drones for farming and better pest control. These drones help explore new and environmentally friendly ways to farm.

A New Way to Farm

Farming has been around for ages and it is one of the biggest industries in the world. According to the U.S Department of Agriculture, (USDA), this industry alone helps generate over “1.3 trillion” dollars in food and it provides habitats for a huge variety of species. Because of this farmers around the world are finding new ways to make farming more efficient and better for the environment. One of these ways is using a specific agricultural drone that helps hard-working farmers protect and preserve their crops. Also, these drones help the environment around them by cutting down on air pollution. These drones also come with some controversies like expenses and privacy. This makes mixed opinions about if they should be allowed or not.

Advantages

Farmer drones have many advantages when it comes to helping out farmers and the environment. Things like mapping and spraying chemicals are just a couple of things farmer drones can help with.

Mapping

This process is hard for farmers to keep up with but these farmer drones make the process so much easier. Instead of farmers constantly getting exhausted because they have to walk for miles just to look at how their farm is doing, these drones can give area surveillance and measure the height and number of crops there are. These drones can also scout out for any crops that are damaged or infested so a farmer knows when to eliminate them.

Spraying Chemicals

Drones help with infested crops but did you know that they help get rid of them too? That’s right drones can spray chemicals that can help get rid of pests so that farmers can protect their hard work. For example, there is a bunch of weeds growing in the way of your plants. Your drone can spray at such a precision that the herbicide it used does not get on other plants. Now does that seem like a better solution than just spraying it and hoping for the best? This precision is only a minor part of an agricultural drone and it can save your farm in a matter of seconds.

Saving the Enviroment

This agricultural drone surprisingly helps save the environment. It does this by taking the place of agricultural planes. These planes spray fertilizer over large portions of land, but they use high levels of fuel. Because of this drones are way better because instead of using gas they are battery powered and can cover almost just as much land as a plane can with just a simple battery switch. This lowers the gas omission that farming contributes to. As you know global warming is hurting the environment and these drones can help save it. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, (EPA), in 2018 agriculture took up “10%” of U.S greenhouse gas emissions seen in the chart below. Using farmer drones could help decrease that number seeing how it is battery operated and it replaces the use of all that fuel that is unneeded. This can help decrease global warming and help save the environment cause change is needed. Even Greta Thunberg agrees by saying, “We must change almost everything in our current societies.”

Disadvantages

Farmer Drones could be the next big thing but some people don’t think so. Some people think that these drones could be too expensive and could cause crowded airspaces.

They are Expensive

Farmer Drones are very expensive and some farmers are not willing to spend that much money on them. What do I mean? According to “Bestdroneforthejob,” the cost of these drones range from “$1500 to $25,000″ which is a lot of money but as Paullina Simons once said, “Everything comes with a price.” These drones are supposed to be expensive because they are gaining popularity and people need to understand that drones could change our future for our climate. These drones are important and spending a little bit of money on them does not seem that big of a deal for me. So why not just buy these life-changing drones for yourself and make life easier.

Crowded Airspace

Another reason why people are against these magnificent drones is that they don’t want to crowd the airspace. Just because a couple incidents happened does not mean that drones crowding the airspace. Just think about it there are already restrictions being held against drones.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA), there are multiple drone safety restrictions such as:

  • Drones can only fly at or below 400 feet.
  • Your drone has to be within sight.
  • Don’t fly in restricted airspace.
  • Don’t fly near other aircraft, especially near airports.
  • Don’t fly over groups of people.
  • Don’t fly over stadiums or sports events.
  • Don’t fly near emergency response efforts such as fires.

These restrictions are made so that the airspace is safe for planes and other flying vehicles. This just shows you that if you are a happy recipient of a farmer drone, it will not be dangerous as long as your following the law. So, to all the people that say that these drones are crowding and hurting the airspace, you need to do your research because as you can see some restrictions allow airspace to maintain safety and the (FAA) makes sure that everyone is safe when dealing with these situations.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, farmer drones are great for the farming industry when it comes to mapping and spraying chemicals. Yes, it has its disadvantages but the advantages outweigh them. Overall, these drones are the future of our generation and are the best things a farmer could ask for.

2020 Election: Biggest Event of the Year

The 2020 Presidential Election has so far been a huge roller coaster and I’m here to break it down for you. Also, make sure you go vote it is a great way to express your opinion and show the world that you matter. Now let’s talk about the 2020 Election.

Now, before we get into the candidates and the stats we have to take it back to the history books. So what even is a “presidential election”? A presidential election in the U.S is a formal and organized voting system that allows American citizens to pick which candidate they want to be president. This was first introduced in 1788 when George Washington and John Adams ran for president. During this election, U.S citizens used paper ballots and ink pens to vote for who they wanted president. The two candidates campaigned and debated but in the end, George Washington won and became the first president of the United States and John Adams became the first Vice president of the United States. Now in 2020, citizens in America are allowed to vote in person and at home because of coronavirus. These votes are counted towards their electoral college and whichever candidate gets to 270 electoral college votes first becomes the U.S president. Now that you know the basics it’s time to jump back into the 2020 Election.

Meet the Candidates

Many candidates participate in an election and only a handful make it to the ballot, (The official form for the U.S Election). Before that, they must decide how those candidates get on the ballot. Most of the time in a U.S election there are two major parties in which most candidates participate in. These parties are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. There are more parties but these are the major ones in America. These parties then run against their teammates to see who will represent their party in the presidential election. Once that happens those candidates will then be put on the ballot to run in the election.

The 2020 U.S Election has some of the most controversial candidates in history and these are the candidates. Starting off first is the current U.S President Donald Trump. Donald Trump is a member of the Republican party and was first known to America as a businessman and Tv personality before entering politics in 1987. You also may know him from his famous pledge, “We will make America strong again, we will make America wealthy again, we will make America proud again, we will make America safe, and yes together we will make America great again,” (Associated Press (2017, January 20). Pledge from Trump to “Make America Great Again“. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZn8tFbISpo). Donald is 74 years old and has been known for doing some quality work in his 2016 presidency. The Trump Administration released a document stating what he has done in his 2016 presidency. This document stated that he created “almost 4 million jobs since his win in the 2016 election,” and that he has created “over 400,000 manufacturing jobs” in only the first two years of his presidency, (Trump Administration. “Trump Administration Accomplishments.” The White House, The United States Government, Sept. 2018, www.whitehouse.gov/trump-administration-accomplishments/). Although some U.S citizens disagree as they think that he was the worst president in history because of his “toxic” personality and his “childish” behavior. He has made some bad decisions in the past 4 years but some think he is still a great president or at least better than Richard Nixon.

The other candidate in the 2020 Presidential Election is former Vice President Joe Biden. Joe Biden is a member of the Democratic Party and is great friends with former President Barack Obama. Biden is 77 years old and first got into politics in 1973 as a U.S senator for the Democratic Party. He then became Barrak Obama’s running mate in 2008 which in turn made him Vice President. As Vice president, he “Revived the Economy” by modifying some of the law’s worst provisions and “Kept the Faith” going in America, (The White House. (2016). “Vice President Joe Biden”. Retrieved from https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/vp). He was then taken out of office in 2016 because of Donald Trump. He then announced in 2019 that he would be running for President with his running mate Kamala Harris. In this election, he has caught the attention of his supporters by saying that “I campaigned as a Democrat but I will govern as an American president,” (TRT World Now. (2020, November 4). “We are not enemies – Biden”. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6T_MikHxGc). He said this to show that he will represent all of America and not just his supporters.

Early Voters

The 2020 Election is already underway but before I show you we need to talk about the early votes. U.S citizens have till the end of election day polls to vote but people vote on election day too. According to “USA Today,” there were over “100 million” early ballots cast before election day. That is double the number of early votes from the 2016 presidential election. These early votes according to USA Today made up about “80%” of the votes in the 2020 election, (Garrison, J. (2020, November 03). “Voter turnout 2020: Early voting tops 100 million ballots cast”. Retrieved November 24, 2020, from https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/11/03/voter-turnout-2020-early-voting-tops-100-million/6133004002/). This shows just how big America is, and imagine if everyone in America voted, that would be over 1 billion ballots! I don’t know about you but that would be like a global record and a big achievement for America and its citizens.

Election Day

Now even though we have talked about early voters which make up a lot of the election we cannot forget about the citizens that voted on election day. There were still a lot of voters that voted on election day and almost every state had already “exceeded the number of votes cast in 2016 by about 50%“, (English, A. 2020, November 03. “US Election 2020: How many people have voted so far compared to 2016”. Retrieved November 24, 2020, from https://en.as.com/en/2020/11/03/latest_news/1604411082_779066.html). That is a lot considering that the 2020 election has taken almost 3 days to gather up all the votes while the 2016 election only took about 2 days. There are also votes from absentees, people that are a little late to cast their vote, and those are not even counted yet because of how many votes were voted on election day. Anyway, now it’s time to get to the good part which is where the election stands right now.

File:Election Day 2020 (50564518207).jpg - Wikimedia Commons

Who Will Win

Now that we have broken down all the major parts that go into the election it’s time to figure out who will turn out victorious. In the counter below from CNN, it shows that Joe Biden is in the lead with “253 electoral votes” while Donald Trump is trailing behind with only “214 electoral votes,” (Macaya, M. (2020, November 06). “November 5th US election news”. Retrieved November 24, 2020, from https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-biden-election-results-11-05-20/index.html). This is because as the votes come in some states have already counted all of their votes and have declared a winner for their state. This is also because Donald Trump is going for bigger states in the southern part of the country so it takes longer for them to count their votes. Also if you look at the map below it shows that Biden got major wins in the Northern part of the country by winning California and Oregon while Trump got major wins in Florida and Texas. Because of these tight battles, it all comes down to Arizona and Nevada because Trump has to win at least one of those and the southern states he is leading in to win the election while Biden just needs to win those two to win the election. This is a close election and there are still many votes that are needed to be counted. There is a problem with that for the Republicans because most of them are mail-in votes and Biden has won most of the mail-in votes. These votes are also being counted in the counties that Biden is leading in which means even if Trump gets more votes in the counties he is winning in, Biden might get more votes just because of which counties he has and how many people live in those counties. So even though they have not counted all the votes yet I predict that Biden is going to take either Arizona or Nevada and win the election. There have also been conspiracy theories about how Joe Biden has tightened some of the leads with Trump even though he was winning by half a million votes. There have also been reports of people counting very late ballots on purpose to try and get Joe Biden to win the election and that can cause major consequences in the country if it is true. If you want to follow the election and watch the updates click the link under the electoral vote counter.

My Opinion

Personally, I am a Republican not because of Trump but more so I agree with more things from the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. Even though I do want Trump to win it looks like Joe Biden is going to win and I guess I am ok with that as long as he does something good for our country. I also believe that something is fishy about this election because many gaps that Trump made to win states have just been closed by Biden. This was like Michigan because Trump was leading by so much in Michigan and for some reason, Biden came back in a few hours and won. So I do think that this election is great and all but I also feel that it is tearing America apart more than putting it back together. Anyway, overall this was a great election and I hope we get some great things out of these candidates.

Fear: The Beast Within

Fear is a natural thing that can occur at any time. Sometimes it can occur at the strangest places. Fear is something that can mess with your brain entirely depending on how you process it. You can either choose to overcome it or let it get the best of you.

Credited by Google Images

A Strange Side of Fear

Fear can happen in many strange places and you have to overcome it even when you’re in a situation that could possibly bring your life to an end. We see this same subject happen in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” written by Richard Connell. In this short story, a man named Rainsford falls off his yacht and gets stranded on a dangerous island. This dangerous island is run by the evil mastermind General Zaroff who hunts humans as a sport. Rainsford accepts an offer from Zaroff to be hunted for money which turns out to be a lot harder than he thought. Rainsford goes through many different obstacles and challenges along the way. In some situations, his fear was getting the best of him and almost got him killed. But that did not stop Rainsford as he used his survival skills and tricks to overcome the dangerous sport. In the end, Rainsford outsmarts Zaroff and kills him in his own territory to win “The Most Dangerous Game.” This story was a great representation of fear as it shows how the factors of fear affect you as a whole. It also shows that fear can be deafeated if you choose to overcome it.

What Factors come with Fear

There are many factors of fear that occur when in a state of fear that can be overcome. In his article, “What Happens When the Brain Feels Fear,” Arash Javanbakht reflects on how fear has factors and how those factors develop in our brain to tell us when we need to fear something. It says in his article that, “Nearly one in four people experience a form of anxiety disorder during their lives, and nearly 8 percent experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Disorders of anxiety and fear include phobias, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, PTSD, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.” I feel that this is true because fear can cause many disorders if it can not be overcome by some people. I also believe that these disorders need to be taken into consideration by people around them. It also says in the article that we learn fear from personal experiences. It says this by stating that, “Similar to other animals, we very often learn fear through personal experiences, such as being attacked by an aggressive dog or observing other humans being attacked by an aggressive dog. However, an evolutionarily unique and fascinating way of learning in humans is through instruction – we learn from spoken words or written notes!” I think this is true too because if you think about it most fear does happen from personal experiences like going to haunted houses or maybe being chased by a dog. This article also relates to an event in “The Most Dangerous Game” when Rainsford is faced with Zaroff and his hounds and he gets anxiety about if the hounds were going to find him or not. He ends up overcoming this fear and is able to have an opportunity to get away when one of Zaroffs dogs falls into a trap that he made. This gives Zaroff anger as he knows then that hunting Rainsford is not going to be an easy task.

In conclusion, fear is a common and natural thing that occurs in everyone’s life that can get the best of you or be overcome to have great opportunities and rewards in the end.

Thank you for reading my blog and I hope to see you on my next post!

Top 5 Greatest Playstation Games of the Century

We all know how video games are and how they work. Some people hate them and want them out of existence, and some people love them and want to make a living out of it. Either way, they can be filled with excitement and pleasure in so many ways. So today I will be showing you the top 5 greatest Playstation games of the century that you need to play.

#5 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

The Uncharted series by Naughty Dog is an action/adventure series that was first released in 2007. In the words of GamesRadar+,” The Uncharted series is full of great games with jaw-dropping spectacle, fun puzzles, and emotional storylines.” This series follows the adventures of the treasure hunter and fortune seeker Nathan Drake as he sets off to uncover the truths behind numerous mythical treasures and lost cities, resulting in clashes with rival hunters and thieves. And while many of the Uncharted games could have made this list Uncharted 2 feels like a classic and has great graphics that still hold up even today and that is not including the great gameplay that is very fluent and flexible. Many gamers would disagree with this being on the list because of its “outdated graphics” and “unexplained bugs”. Even though this did happen it still is a classic and it really introduced a new feel to PlayStation at the time. You also have to look at what awards and reviews it had gotten in 2009. Not only did it win Game of the year in 2009 at the VGX gaming awards but it also won the Best graphics award and the best PS3 game award at the VGX awards. I feel that this game does deserve its spot on the list because even though some of its aspects are outdated it is still a good game that represented the PS3 as a great console.

#4 God of War

This reimagining series reaches godly heights! Take the vicious Kratos that is responsible for almost all of the deaths in the Greek Pantheon, drop him into Norse Mythology, and make him a sympathetic father and that is how you get God of War. In the words of IGN, one of the biggest gaming news sites, “The combat is satisfying, the visuals are remarkable stunning, and the story is just perfection.” That statement from IGN was made about the newest installment of the God of War series which was released in 2018. This game continues the story of Kratos and his son and their adventure through the Norse wilds to bury his wife’s ashes. This game got a big majority of PlayStation gamers as it was named VGX 2018 Game of the Year just weeks after it was released. There was a handful of people that disagreed with VGX’s selection because that same year was the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 which was also a nomination for VGX’s Game of the Year in 2018. Gamers also did not like the way the camera moved as you fought and the “climbing system” because they felt it was a “waste of time.” Based on stats and awards though, I still feel that this game deserves to be on the list.

#3 Until Dawn

You have a Cabin in the woods filled with your stereotypical horror movie protagonist. Not to mention their lives depend on the decisions you make. Welcome to the 2015 Horror game classic, Until Dawn. This game was influenced by many other styles of gaming but one the most controversial thing about this game that gamers can agree upon is the gaming mechanics. The mechanics in this game are good but some gamers disagree as they thought this game was “Too Much Like Naughty Dog.” This game had very similar mechanics and screen quality to the Uncharted series, (Naughty Dog), which made gamers think it was copying their game. The game was still great as it had some humorous conflicts and a good storyline. Until Dawn did win a BAFTA award for original property and some respect from the PlayStation community. I put this game on the list because it is such an underdog among most PlayStation games and the game itself is overlooked by many gamers in the PlayStation community.

#2 Marvel’s Spider Man

This action-packed superhero adventure allows players to control “spidey” as he swings through New York taking down crime and fighting the roster of some of his biggest villains. The story is gripping and emotional as it takes Peter Parker down some depressing paths. It seems that the writers of this game really get who Peter is though he gets beaten down over and over again, he always manages to get back up and do the right thing. This game was named by IGN as an “outstanding” story with “unimaginable” graphics. The big controversy for this game was all about the DLC and how it was not supposed to be there. The DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man was announced as many critics believed it was, “Not meant to be there”, as it featured the next-gen spider man, Miles Morales. Gamers and critics thought that Miles Morales would have his own game seeing how he had his own separate dimension from Spiderman. Even though that was a controversy, this game still has won countless awards like at the SXSW Gaming Awards 2019, eight nominations at VGX awards, the Excellence in Animation awards, and the Excellence in Convergence awards. Also at the Game Critics Awards 2018, it garnered three nominations and won two awards: Best Console Game and Best Action/Adventure Game. I feel that because of these accomplishments the game has made and its ability to get the world’s attention, I feel that it should be on this list.

#1 The Last of Us

While zombie stories are nothing new, The Last of Us shines in making the narrative centered on its two protagonists, Joel and Ellie. This game masters the arts of getting you to care about these two fought characters and their relationship with one another. The brutal stealth-based combat system I feel adds to the game’s sense of desperation and hopelessness. Other gamers would disagree because it is hard to scavenge while in combat and running at people just gives them point-blank accuracy against you. The big controversy in this game is that you cannot run into most situations doing what you want, you have to consider your approach and sneak around to survive. This game has some good graphics but what makes it the best on my list is the way the story is told and how it relates back to problems in modern-day life. It shows just how much being an outcast can make you vulnerable to the groups around you. It also shows that your actions can make a difference even though it might not seem like it. This game alone just really shows you how some things in life you just have to overcome to succeed. This game has received awards way beyond what you would imagine as it is recorded as the 2nd most awards received by any game by critics. This game scored almost 200 awards which makes it trail right behind the most awarded game on PlayStation, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

The Last of Us
Credited by Naughty Dog

In conclusion, Playstation did a great job of making games that are fun for everyone and are great to play. Even though some of these games do hold some controversies, they still deserve the respect of the gaming community. Not to mention, most of the games are apart of some of the biggest developers in the world including Marvel, Supermassive Games, and Naughty Dog.

I hope this is helpful to my viewers and stay tuned for my next blog. I hope y’all have a great day!
